Rotational Speed Measurement
Solutions
The signals of tacho generators can mostly be connected directly to a measuring system by BMC Messsystreme GmbH as an analog signal. When using an impulse rotational speed sensor, our bmcm measuring systems with integrated counter function are most suitable, for example the digital-IO DAQ system USB-IO16 or the network measuring system LAN-AD16fx.
The best options for incremental encoders are our measurement systems with integrated counter function, like the digital I/O measurement system USB-OI16.
Measurement Device
- 16 optocoupler inputs (3..32V)
- 16 semiconductor switches with high-side
drivers (5..32V) - 2 counters (32 bit) for pulse, incremental encoder,
or pulse-time measurement - supply 7..32V (external) or 5V (internal)
- USB 2.0, full-speed
- DIN rail mounting

The measurement of rotational speed quite often has to cover a wide range of rotational speeds. The requirements of slow rotating processes and fast rotating ones are very different, so that the measuring process has to be adjusted accordingly. The rotational speed change is usually not a very dynamic signal.
There are two different measuring processes available for the acquisition of rotational speed. Depending on the rotational speed a tacho generator produces voltage that the measuring system can collect. The disadvantage of this measuring process is for once the wearout of the sensor as well as the missing possiblity to acquire very slow rotating speeds. The second measuring process is – independent to the inbuilt rotating speed sensor – an impulse rotating speed sensor that measures the number of incoming impulses per time unit or between two impulses, meaning the reciprocal of the frequency. There are optical and inductive sensors available. The impulse acquisitions are digital not analog signals.
